Fighting for Women in Hollywood

For all their strides and successesMeryl Streep, Ava DuVernay and John Stewart on Women in Hollywood… women still have a far distance towards equality in Hollywood. This was the focus of Tina Brown’s annual Women in the World Summit[ref]Women in the World Summit[/ref].

Some of the major points discussed[ref]Vulture[/ref] include:

  • Meryl Streep’s upcoming film Suffragette
  • Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Oscar® winning documentary about acid attacks on Pakistani women
  • Activism in film and in the real world

The next step, Streep is putting her money where her mouth is[ref]Forbes[/ref], to use a familiar cliché. She has funded a screenwriters lab for female writers over the age of 40[ref]Variety[/ref].

Streep’s Writers Lab will accept submissions starting May 1st. The submission period will end on June 1st and eight winners will be announced on August 1st.
