R.I.P. Ben Powers

Alton “Ben” Powers, best known as the husband of Thelma Evans (portrayed by BernNadette Stanis) on the CBS series Good Times, exited the planet at the age of 64 on April 6th.

Ben Powers and BernNadette StanisA Brooklyn NY native who resided in New England, departing this life in New Bedford, Massachusets, Powers’ early television appearances included PBS Great Performances and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In.

The final season of Good Times put him in the national spotlight. From there, he acted in numerous 80’s series, including:

  • Gimme a Break!
  • Flamingo Road
  • The New Odd Couple
  • The Greatest American Hero
  • Laverne & Shirley

His next big break was as a regular on Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled when its star (Stacy Keach) was jailed on a drug trafficking charge[ref]Wikipedia[/ref]. Powers also had a few film roles before leaving Hollywood, including two of Cheech and Chong’s films.

On May 3rd, there will be a memorial in New Bedford[ref]New York Daily News[/ref]. He’s survived by his mother, two sisters, two uncles, two aunts, four nephews and three nieces[ref]NBC News[/ref].
