R.I.P. Percy Sledge

Percy Sledge, singer of the definitive love song When a Man Loves a Woman, has exited the planet.

Percy SledgeHis manager Mark Lyman of Artists International Management confirmed that Sledge lost his fight with liver cancer after 74 years of life.

Called The King of Slow Soul[ref]New York Times[/ref], Sledge became a Number One artist with Atlantic Records in 1966.

An originator of the Muscle Shoals sound[ref]CNN[/ref], Sledge never received royalties for his breakthrough song. In a bad business move, Sledge gave the songwriting credits to bassist Calvin Lewis and organist Andrew Wright[ref]Rock & Roll Hall of Fame[/ref].
